Steer mates to the Three Trees bulls that sold on November 3, 2014 —

The steer mates to the 2014 Three Trees sale bulls gained 4.37 lbs/day for 60 days with a feed conversion of 4.11 pounds of dry matter per pound of gain for a cost of gain of $64.66 per hundred weight of gain, weighing an average of 860 lbs. when shipped from a grow yard in Oklahoma to Cactus Feedyard in Texas. There, the 102 steers gained 4.54 lbs/day for 131 days with a feed conversion of 5.78 pounds of dry matter per pound of gain for a cost of gain of $81.37 per hundred weight of gain, weighing an average of 1,462 lbs. at harvest.¾ The steers had a dressing percentage of 61.89% for an average hot carcass weight of 905 lbs. with seven carcasses that exceeded the 1,050 discount level. With an average rib eye area of 16.3 square inches and an average back fat measurement of .53 for an average USDA Yield Grade of 3.3, there were only seven of these heavy cattle that were Yield Grade 4 discounted and 52 head (50.05%) that qualified for the Certified Angus Beef brand in the Tyson plant at Amarillo, Texas where the plant average qualification rate is 3.13%.

Especially pleasing was the validation of our Angus Plus breeding program with five of the seven Angus Plus steers (13/16 Angus and 3/16 Brahman) sired by our Angus marbling leader Three Trees Double Design from daughters of our Brangus IMF leader Lambert of Brinks qualified for the Certified Angus Beef brand — a qualification rate of more than 71% in a packing plant with a 3% qualification plant average. In the group that had an average HCW per day of age of 1.43 pounds/day, these seven Angus Plus steers were 1.51 pounds/day with an average hot carcass weight of 906 pounds and an average rib eye area of 15.03 square inches. They did exactly what they were designed to do!
